a large, web-footed tropical wading bird with very long and slender legs and neck, a hey, bent bill, and feathers that vary from pink to deep red.
[< Portuguese flamingo < Spanish flamenco (originally) Flemish; a Fleming (< Middle Dutch Vlâming); later, flamingo, associated by popular etymology with Spanish flama flame, because of the ruddy complexion of the Flemings, and the red color of the bird.
